Your Guide to Yoga Workout Clothing

Yoga clothes for men have come a long way in the past few years. Smart designs, good looking and stylish yoga clothing for men has replaced that old pair of shorts and sweatpants as your only choices.

One of the great things about yoga is that you really don’t need much to do it. In fact, if you want to, you can even do it naked.

But most of us will wear something whilst practicing, so what to look out for?

Let’s start below the waist…

If you are doing one of the hotter forms of yoga (Bikram, Astanga, Power Yoga etc.) then you should buy yoga shorts, rather than yoga pants. You could use a regular pair of sports shorts but make sure you have plenty of room for movement, and also that they don’t have thick pockets (particularly at the front or back) as you don’t want a seam of fabric cutting into you if you are in a ground-based asana.

So, what you need in your yoga shorts or longs is plenty of flexibility, a reasonable degree of tightness/huggability, and also a fabric that is not too thick. Having a thin fabric is important as otherwise you will experience the discomfort of bunching at the top of your thighs and behind your knees.

Another thing to consider is whether to “go Commando”. Providing yourself with a level of support is important. It’s very easy to squash your penis and testicles if they aren’t kept under control and bring tears to your eyes!

Also, the last thing you want to be doing is constantly re-arranging yourself in a class (and getting a reputation!), so wear thin underpants or ensure the shorts you use have enough support to keep your valuables in place!

Moving above the waist, another important article of yoga clothing for men is a yoga shirt. Many men will practice yoga without a top and in some classes this is absolutely ok.

But you may attend a class where that is frowned upon, or perhaps you feel more comfortable covering up. Whatever the reason I would recommend you get something that is not too tight but reasonably figure-hugging.

You want to get something that will stay on your body when you are in an inverted pose (like the shoulderstand) and not fall down and cover your face. Or just get something you can tuck into your shorts.
